Provisions against Potential Tsunamis
Countermeasures against Tsunami and
Flooding
Kansai Electric Power is making an utmost effort to enhance the safety and reliability of our nuclear power stations against tsunamis by installing the tide embankments and protective walls in order to prevent the recurrence of a severe accident like that at Fukushima Daiichi Power Station of Tokyo Electric Power, which resulted from massive tsunamis.
Breakwater, Tide Embankment and Protective Gates to Mitigate
Tsunami Impact and Prevent Tsunami from Flooding into the Site Area
We have installed the breakwater and tide embankment as the countermeasures against tsunamis. The breakwater installed offshore is able to mitigate the tsunami impact and the tide embankment and protective gates are intended to prevent tsunami from flooding into the site area.
- 1. Installation of Tide Embankment: Mihama Power Station
- We installed a 11.5m high above sea level and approx. 100m long tide embankment outside Wakasa bay, to which a tsunami can reach directly. In addition, in order to protect against flooding due to tsunami turning around into the inland sea, we are installing a 6m high above sea level (approx. 2.5m high) and total approx. 1.4km long tide embankment in Nyu bay.
- 2. Increasing the Height of Breakwater: Ohi Power Station
- We increased the height of the existing 5m high breakwater to 8m high above the sea level by concrete placement, installation of wave dissipating blocks, and reinforcing work.
- 3. Installation of Protective Gates: Takahama Power Station
- We installed a 8.5m high protective gate on the side of the water intake channel. The protective gate can be remotely closed in the event of tsunami attack to prevent tsunami from reaching and flooding into the area. We also installed a 8m high tide embankment on the side of water discharge.
"Protective Walls" which Protect the Site Area and Plant Facilities
In preparation for a tsunami beyond expectation, which exceeds the height of the tide embankment and other measures, protective walls are installed to prevent tsunami from flooding into the water intake structure.
