Delivering electricity/power distribution

Network Engineering Division is responsible for delivering electricity generated at our power plants to final customers via distribution lines spreading throughout the regions. In the event of an outage due to damage to the distribution equipment by a typhoon, lightning or other disasters, workers will work round-the-clock for swift recovery of power supply.

A heavy rain, which hit the Kinki area from August 13 to 14, 2012, marked the highest rainfall ever recorded in Hirakata city in Osaka prefecture and Kyo-tanabe city in Kyoto prefecture. It caused landslide and flooding, and in particular in Uji city and Kyo-tanabe city, which were hit heavily by the rain, power outages took place in a wide area, leading to loss of power at 2,670 households at maximum.

To be fully prepared for potential disasters, we had made continuous efforts to build close relationships with local partner companies who were familiar with forest roads and other passages in the region. Therefore, we were able to deliver generator vehicles and other necessary equipment to the scene of disaster via the shortest bypass in spite of collapsed roads. In the places where vehicles were unable to pass, workers carried equipment and material by themselves while being hindered by the mud.

After managing to get to the site of disaster, they faced a devastating scenery with fallen utility poles swept away with collapsed roads due to landslide. Being unable to get heavy machines into the site, it was extremely difficult to pursue recovery work even with risks of secondary disaster. In areas with difficulties to recover power supply in a short term, we used generator vehicles to supply electricity as a quick-fix measure.

At the scene of disaster, all the workers joined forces in an all-out effort to recover power supply with a strong will to deliver electricity as quickly as possible taking advantage of expertise and skill required for restoration. As a result, all power outages were restored in 5 days after the occurrence of the disaster.

Following the completion of recovery work after a hard struggle, front-line workers renewed their sense of mission while feeling motivation and satisfaction when they received a customer's voice "thank you very much for turning on the light".
