Kansai Electric Power -power with heart-

Wholeheartedly : Inheriting safety spirits of Kansai Electric Power
I will give top priority to ensuring safety

I will give top priority to ensuring safety in order to both maintain my own safety and preserve the happiness of my fellows and their families/Mr. Nagai at Civil Engineering and Construction Center
Safety culture: it is the soul and spirit of Kansai Electric Power, which has been inherited from superiors to younger colleagues. Safety culture has been built and also will be furthermore enhanced in future. Here, we focus on the earnest dedication of a KEPCO man toward ensuring safety.

Mr. Nagai is one of the architect engineers, who are specialized in building construction, accounting for only 1% of approximately 22,000 KEPCO's employees. The work activities of the architect engineer cover the investigation, planning, design, work management and maintenance of KEPCO's all buildings including hydraulic, thermal and nuclear power stations, substations and branch offices as well as dormitories and employees' housings. Therefore, in pursuing their work, coordination with all outside stakeholders including subcontractors and governmental agencies as well as internal organizations is essential. Mr. Nagai is a professional architect engineer who has accumulated experience in various divisions. Here, we focus on the earnest dedication of Nagai toward ensuring safety while keeping the consistent mission in his mind wherever he belongs.

Mr. Nagai's team is responsible for over 2,000 buildings and facilities.

Mr. Nagai at the Civil Engineering and Construction Center is mainly responsible for the modification, repair and maintenance of total 2,288 buildings associated with power transformation in northern Osaka and Nara areas, including substations, switchgear offices, linking stations and electric power centers.

"My team, consisting of only 5 members including me, is responsible for over 700 buildings associated with power transformation. Therefore, each member sometimes treat as many as 20 work activities annually. As we are dealing with the essential facilities associated with power transformation, even a single error may lead to the interruption of power supply. Keeping it in mind, we consistently work on our activities placing top priority on safety.
Even in working on a modification or repair, we are required to take various steps, from the planning through design and work management, as we do in constructing a new building.
I brace myself to execute a perfect job at all times when I think that the facilities I have worked on will be operating for more than half a century."

Building up a sense of fellowship

To ensure the safe and accurate execution of work activities, it is important to build close relationship with contractors who are engaged in field activities. Keeping and deepening an equal level of safety consciousness among the stakeholders is essential because a lot of workers in various fields are engaged in the same work activities.

"Each worker being engaged in the activities is our teammate whether he belongs to Kansai Electric Power or a partner company. To enhance communication between the teammates, we are making various efforts, for example, posting a message with a photo of one's face in the workplace. However, to ensure safety, we will do anything even if it would develop into serious discussion. At a workplace, when I noticed a slightest miss and suggested my opinion, there were some differences with a worker on-site who had a high level of safety consciousness. We consulted with each other to figure out a solution and it developed into an acute discussion. Finally, we could reach a middle ground after spending a lot of time. Through such an intense communication, now I can talk with him frankly about all things. Enhanced communication has contributed to promoting work activities in a more smooth and safe manner."

Adhere to basic principles

This is the policy Nagano adheres to when he coaches his subordinates as the assistant team leader.

"Revisiting the fundamentals to fully understand the intention and purpose of each procedure is very important to prevent us from regarding any step as a troublesome task."

All the frontline workers form a single team to build a safe workplace.

Mr. Nagai's safe behavior declaration states that "keep vigilant eyes on present dangers. Let's build a safe workplace together".

"Building sites are always exposed to dangers. A safe condition cannot be kept unless all the stakeholders consistently give attention to safety by keeping vigilant eyes. In the event of a disaster, the person in question and his family will be involved with trouble. To preserve the happiness of my fellows and their families, all the frontline workers should make a concerted effort to build a safe workplace."

Mr. Nagai and his fellows' untiring efforts to pursue safety will continue into the future.
